Audit-ready reconciliation template

Use these sections in Excel or your existing close tool. The goal is to let another accountant reproduce the conclusion without asking the preparer what happened.

Inputs and control totals

Account, period, currency, tolerance, preparer, and reviewer.
Source row count, gross absolute amount, and evidence date.
A completeness check between source totals and reported open items.

Reconciliation summary

One row per accounting conclusion or balanced group.
Open amount, applied amount, remaining balance, and decision status.
A separate engine conclusion and reviewer decision.

Evidence detail

Stable source row ID and source sheet.
Allocation amount and role: obligation, settlement, adjustment, or corroboration.
Direct hyperlink or locator back to the source evidence.

Exceptions and sign-off

Plain-language explanation and required next action.
Owner, aging, disposition, and supporting note.
Dated preparer and independent reviewer sign-off.
